"I develop my own glazes, which I mix from raw minerals and oxides. I apply them in layers and use multiple glaze firings to achieve rich colors and distinctive surface effects. Each one of my pieces is unique.”
“I love the process. The fluid, spontaneous, ‘in the moment’ nature of throwing forms on the wheel is followed by a more precise and detailed attention to glaze chemistry and application. Then, I trust my work to the fickle kiln gods. Opening the kiln is always exciting, surprising and fun!”
“I’ve always been inspired by the classical forms of ancient Greek and Egyptian pottery, as well as Chinese bronzes. More recently, I’ve been intrigued by pottery from the American Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century. Many of my forms reference the human figure in volume and profile”
Joe grew up near New York City, where he was drawn to the city’s rich arts and cultural life. An early interest in sculpture, and then pottery, led Joe to study ceramics with Don Reitz at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a BS in art education. After taking time away to raise a family, Joe turned his attention back to developing his craft and building a studio.
Joe’s pottery experience spans 50 years, with creative periods in New York, Madison WI, Seattle, and now, Eugene.
